High ISO Test

September 18th, 2008

When i first brought home the D700, i quickly ran few test shots and the outputs were totally AWESOME!! Truly AMAZING!! It’s definately worth every $$ spent.

The very first test was to prove its low noise ability on high ISO setting. I had my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 mounted, i picked few Mia toys and position it at the ‘not-so-bright’ area of the house and take a few shots on various settings. I purposely tried on the fancy-colorful toys as to see how its color rendition’s like and i must say i’m very pleased with it.

This is the set up. Few toys with various colors againts a green background.

Throughout the test, the camera was set to the followings.
F-Number: f/4.0
Exposure Program: Aperture Priority
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Metering Mode: Pattern
Active D-Lighting: Auto
White Balance : Auto
Color Space: sRGB
Image Size : Small (2128 x 1416)
Image Quality : Fine

0.8s, f/4.0, ISO200

1/5s, f/4.0, ISO800

1/10s, f/4.0, ISO1600

1/20s, f/4.0, ISO3200

1/40s, f/4.0, ISO6400

1/80s, f/4.0, ISO12800

1/160s, f/4.0, ISO25600

I noticed the noise is only clearly visible at ISO12800. At ISO6400, it still performs tremendously, perhaps comparable to ISO800 on D200 (or even better). In the near future, i guess this camera would definately change the way i shoot photos from flash-dependable to available-light hunter.

To dearest mommy, no worry you can expect me to use this camera for a long period of time, perhaps 2 years - but i can’t promise that for lenses tho ;) ..
